Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones confirmed Saturday that the team has informed Bryant's agent that it will use the franchise tag on the receiver prior to Monday's deadline, ESPN.com's Todd Archer reports.

Analysis: While the franchise designation likely won't please Bryant, owner Jerry Jones indicated during the NFL Combine earlier in February that such a move would likely only be a "placeholder" until player and team come to terms on a more lucrative long-term contract. With at least 85 catches, 1,200 yards, and 12 touchdowns in each of the last three seasons while not missing a single game, Bryant has firmly established himself as one of the elite talents at his position. He won't turn 27 until November and should have a few prime years left in him.

In addition to an offseason wrist surgery, Cushing underwent arthroscopic surgeries on his left knee and left ankle after the season's end, MyFoxHouston reports.

Analysis: Cushing implied that all three surgeries should be non-issues for his preparation for the 2015 season, as he expects to be ready to participate in OTAs. Despite the apparently minor nature of Cushing's recent surgeries, his career-long durability issues are becoming harder to ignore.

Updating a previous report, CSN Bay Area reports that Johnson is not expected to be released imminently, though his standing on the San Francisco roster is unclear.

Analysis: The previous report implied that Johnson would be released in the near future, but for now it apparently remains no more than a consideration for the 49ers, who aren't sure what to make of Johnson and his $6.025 million salary. Since the 49ers acquired Johnson in a trade, cutting him would carry no penalty, but perhaps the organization is loathe to cut an asset that cost a fourth-round pick just one year ago.

Wayne recently underwent surgery to repair a torn triceps and is considering retirement, NFL.com reports.

Analysis: Wayne had 64 receptions for 779 yards receiving and two touchdowns last season, but the triceps injury slowed him late in the season as he had just one reception in three playoff games. It may have been due to the injury, although he missed just one game, but Wayne clearly took a back seat to Donte Moncrief who surpassed him as the No. 2 receiver late in the year. If he returns, it will likely be in a more limited third or fourth receiver role.

    • McCown agreed to terms on a...

McCown agreed to terms on a three-year contract with the Browns on Friday, Mke Garafolo of FOX Sports reports.

Analysis: The Bills were said to be making push for McCown, but the Browns swooped in and inked the veteran signal caller, presumably to be their starter for the foreseeable future. McCown completed just 56.3 percent of his passes with an 11:14 TD:INT ratio in 11 games with the Buccaneers last season, but Brian Hoyer is set to hit free agency and Johnny Manziel proved unprepared for the starting job in his audition last year.
